Nick Schlau

Nicholas Schlau is the founder of Colorado Clay Studio as well as a studio potter and ceramics instructor. Originally from Wyoming, Nick discovered his passion for pottery in high school, drawn to the creativity and freedom of working with clay. After spending five years in Eugene, Oregon mastering Raku pottery—a process known for its unpredictable and unique results—he pursued formal education, earning an associate degree in Fine Arts from Sheridan College and a B.A. in Ceramics from Fort Lewis College in 2014.

His work is primarily wheel-thrown, using stoneware and porcelain to craft functional, fluid forms that feature distinctive textures and designs, such as wavy lines created with trim tools and hidden visual details inside his pieces.

In 2017, Nick founded Colorado Clay Studio & Gallery in Durango, a community-centered space offering pottery classes and workshops for all ages and skill levels. Dedicated to accessibility and education, Nick collaborates with local schools to provide art opportunities for students who might not otherwise experience pottery. His studio also serves as a platform for local artists to exhibit and sell their work. Through his teaching and creative endeavors, Nick continues to share his passion for ceramics while fostering a welcoming and artistic environment.

Makena Cooper

Makena is a multifaceted artist whose work encompasses pottery, painting,
and drawing. Deeply inspired by the natural world and its creatures, her pottery stands out as a signature aspect of her art. Many of her pieces showcase hand-painted designs that blend the bold aesthetics of traditional tattoo art with the vivid colors and dynamic spirit of the Southwest. This distinctive fusion brings her creations to life, reflecting both her artistic versatility and her deep connection to the natural and cultural landscapes that inspire her. She is from Colorado and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Studio Art from Fort Lewis College.

Stephi Denlow

Stephi Denlow is a teacher at Colorado Clay who received her BFA with an emphasis in ceramics from Western State University in Gunnison, CO in 2010. She moved to the Durango valley in 2022’ where she also works as a RN. Stephi’s work is inspired by the landscape she observes on her bike, running rivers, or touring on her skis. Her functional, organic forms emulate the imperfections of nature that makes each piece unique. Stephi’s style is carried in her teaching, where she supports students to explore their own fluidity as they develop their skills throwing on the wheel, glazing, and hand building. Her dog Paco loves coming to the studio, and greets all students with wiggles and kisses.
